PKZip

A PKZip is a powerful shareware DOS / OS/2 file compression utility that squeezes files down in size using a particular algorithm. The utility can be used to compress one or more files at a time. Windows users will have to look to a Windows compression utility such as WinZip. Compressing a file is a means of shortening transmission time across a communications link, as well as saving space and money on storage needs.

PKZip performs two basic operations:

• Compressing a file or list of files (zip)
• Decompressing a file or group of files (unzip)

In addition these, PKZip performs two other operations. ZIP2EXE takes a zipped file and creates a self-extracting file. PKZIPFIX attempts to repair a damaged zip file and creates a new file that can be unzipped.
